Automobile Year was launched in 1953 by Ami Guichard, a young Swiss entrepreneur of 32 years of age.  He invested himself completely in his new venture.  The best writers and photographers, including Charles Faroux, Count Lurani, Yves Debraine, and many others, joined him and he also benefited from the encouragements of Bernard Cahier, a dynamic French journalist who opened the doors to the secret world of racing for him.

From the first issue on, Automobile Year was published in English, in French (L'Année Automobile) and in German (Auto Jahr), and it acquired an international reputation of excellence for the originality of its subjects, the quality of its photography and the attention to its printing.

Until his untimely death in 1986, Ami Guichard managed Automobile Year with the help of a team of specialists carefully selected for each edition in complement to the residential staff.  The publication was then taken over by Jean-Rodolphe Piccard, who had been hired in 1976 already as an editorial secretary, and Editions JR replaced Edita.

In January 2005, well-known car enthusiast Christian Philippsen became the proud new owner of the Automobile Year assets.  It is his intention to pursue the work initiated by his two predecessors and to make the book he cherishes since his childhood ever better over the years.

After having inspired numerous other annuals, after having been copied, Automobile Year remains today – as it was in 1953 – the only annual devoted to the automobile, covering its worldwide industry, racing championships and its heroes.
